BitScope & ARM Systems

Which ARM boards can you use with BitScope?

Raspberry Pi is probably the world's most popular credit card sized ARM computer.

We think it will become even more so now that Version 2 has been released! BitScope has long been a cross-platform system. It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux on most x86 computers.

A few years ago Raspberry Pi caught our attention. It's an ARM based computer so we set about adding ARM support to our range of BitScope software solutions. The result is the BitScope Raspberry Pi Oscilloscope and the tiny BitScope Micro, our smallest BitScope yet and one ideally suited for use with Raspberry Pi.

More recently, many people have asked if BitScope is compatible with other ARM based computers. In principle there is no reason why not. The only requirement is that the board supports a hard float edition of Linux and an ARM core capable of supporting the ARM11 instruction set.

UDOO Board and BitScope Micro

The UDOO iMX6

Many ARM based boards meet these requirements as this video posted by Derek Dickerson shows for one of his personal favorites, the Freescale iMX6 based UDOO board.

If your ARM board runs 32 bit linux (.deb or .rpm), uses ARM's hard-float ABI, supports the ARM11 (ARMv6) instruction set, uses an X11 based desktop and has a spare USB port, you should be good to go.

We officially support the (default) Raspbian environment designed for Raspberry Pi but in light of requests for official support other boards we'll look into this over the coming weeks. However, as Derek has found, if your board has the capabilities we've identified here you're likely to be up and running with BitScope already!

Intel Edison and BitScope Micro

Intel Edison

Our thanks also to Leif Adelow for demonstrating BitScope Micro with Intel Edison. Using BitScope Server he connected BitScope DSO on his PC with BitScope Micro powered and connected to his Edison plugged into Intel's Arduino breakout board.

And before you ask, Edison is of course an ATOM based SBC not ARM! So is Gizmo 2 which is also compatible with BitScope.

The point is that BitScope is compatible with both the ARM and x86 architectures (we're still working on MIPS) whether they're desktop, notebook or embedded, so the choice is entirely is up to you!

We'll post updates about other boards like Beaglebone Black, RioTBoard and others soon. We're confident that even the forthcoming CHIP on Kickstarter will work with BitScope (we'll let you know as soon as we get ours!).
